With lighter evenings now in full force, it’s far more likely that you’ll find yourself less inclined to scurry home after work each day. On a hot summer’s evening, who can resist a quick drink in a beer garden – or several more on a Friday? But the downside to going out straight from work is that we don’t always feel ready to party by the time 6pm comes around. Here are some tips on turning the office look into a bar-worthy outfit.

It’s worth having some things stowed in your desk at work for any last-minute plans. Keep a pair of going-out shoes under your desk to lift an outfit in an instant, and always carry your make-up with you so you can retouch at work. If you know you’re going out after a day at the office, wear simple make up – if any at all – so you can start more or less from scratch at the end of the day. If you need a quick fix, simply add a slick of red lipstick (another good staple to keep to hand) to make any outfit look evening appropriate.

Wear office clothes that can be versatile. For instance, pair a skirt with a pretty top and a cardigan or jacket. Come evening, simply lose the jacket, add killer heels, and some dangly earrings or a chunky cuff bracelet for instant glamour. If you wear trousers to work, choose a pair that you can dress up. Slim-leg, high-waisted trousers in a neutral colour will look great when paired with some brightly coloured sky high heels.

If you wear neutral heels for work, kick them off under the table when the end of the day comes around and switch them for something more exciting. A good idea is to leave your work shoes in the office, so you don’t have to carry them around with you. If you have a big work bag that you don’t want to take out with you, make sure you take a clutch to work to transfer your necessities into. Alternatively, invest in a work bag that will look great on your shoulder at any time of day. A big python skin-style tote in a neutral colour will serve you well.
